Nautical Belly Rings

600x640_Anchors (3)
Nautical belly rings are always popular and as we get closer to summer we ask ourselves, “is it anchors aweigh or anchors away?” We want to take a few moments to clear this mystery up so this little phrase is never spelled wrong again. It’s understandable why one might think that the correct term is “away”. I mean you are removing something. But an anchor that is “aweigh” is one that has just begun to put weight on whatever is being used to hall it up. Now it’s all making sense, isn’t it? There are many other popular phrases and sayings that have nautical origins including; loose cannon, shake a leg and shiver my timbers. We know you’ll all sleep better tonight knowing that it’s Anchors Aweigh in the morning! In the meantime, check out the cool 600x640_Anchors (2)nautical themed body jewelry available at bellybling.net.

Q&A: Claddagh Belly Button Rings

image of one of bellybling.net's Claddagh belly button ringsWith St. Patrick’s Day coming up, we’ve received several questions about our Claddagh Belly Button Rings. Well as you know by now, your wish is our command! Here are the answers to some of your top questions about these intriguing symbols.

Q: Where do claddagh rings come from?

A: Claddagh rings have been around for quite some time. In fact, the actual date is unknown simply because there are so many old legends surrounding the symbol. For example, one legend says that a woman named Margareth Joyce married a man from Spain. Sadly, Margareth’s husband died shortly after their marriage, and he left her with lots of money. She later went to Ireland, remarried, and used that money to build bridges. As a token of her kindness, an eagle flew overhead and dropped the ring into her hands.

While we don’t have a definitive answer on the date, all of the stories seem to originate in Ireland, more specifically the Irish fishing village of Claddagh.

Q: What do the crown, the heart, and the hands stand for?

A: The crown stands for loyalty, the hands represent friendship, and the heart naturally symbolizes love. Essentially they’re the factors that form the foundation of any good relationship.

Q: I’ve heard it means something if the ring is pointing one way over another?

A: Good question! Yes, it does mean two entirely different things if the ring is facing away from your body or towards your body. It also means something different depending on which hand you wear it on. Here’s how it breaks down…

Right Hand, Heart Facing Away from Your Body: While you’re open to the possibility of love, your heart is still free. It doesn’t belong to anyone. Essentially, you’re single and looking.

Right Hand, Heart Facing Toward Your Body: Now you’re “Facebook official.” You’re in a relationship, and your heart is no longer out in the open for anyone to come along and try to win over.

Left Hand, Heart Facing Away from Your Body: As you can imagine, once your claddagh ring has been switched to the left hand it means things are getting serious. Your heart belongs to someone. Claddagh rings are often worn like this upon an engagement.

Left Hand, Heart Facing Toward Your Body: This shows that your two hearts have become one. It’s the claddagh equivalent to a wedding ring.

Q: Can men wear claddagh rings too?

A: Claddagh rings are unisex, and they mean the same thing when being worn by either a man or a woman. That said, while the symbol itself is open to either sex the design may not be. A woman’s claddagh ring often contains extra jewels or flare, and men’s tend to be plainer.

Q: Have any celebrities been known to wear claddagh rings?

A: Everyone from politicians to movie stars have been seen wearing these relationship status symbols. Former presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, Jennifer Aniston, John Wayne, Bono, and even Walt Disney!

Country Charm: Belly Bling for the Rough Riders

It’s no secret that throughout history women have had to work to have same rights as men, and women’s participation in the rodeo has been no exception. Fortunately, that’s where Annie Oakley came in.

Born a no-name girl in Ohio that wanted to break into a “man’s work,” Annie had her work cut out for her. Being the first real woman in rodeo, she wasn’t taken seriously during the beginning of her career. However, as time went on even the boys couldn’t ignore a woman who could handle a gun.

In 1885 Annie Oakley made a name for herself as the famous Buffalo Bill sharpshooter, known for her ability to hit glass balls in air. She not only did her career a favor, she did the little girls who wanted to play with something other than a doll a favor. The rest is history.

That was over a century ago. Since then, not only have men come to realize (and adore) country girls, but fashion has embraced them as well…

Maybe it was all those hunky country boys, or maybe it was just the thrill of riding a horse, but this year brought back the cowgirl hats, buckles, boots, belts, and bags in a BIG way! So with all of those country clothes, couldn’t you use a little country charm?

Here are some of our favorite country girl accessories:

26072-horse-dangling-belly-ring-w-cz_1_320Horse-Loving Hottie: Nothing says country like the feel of wind blowing through your hair as your horse trots around an open field.  That’s why we love this Horse Danging Belly Ring. You can practically feel the wind as this cubic zarconia horse lifts his legs high to pick up speed.31776-cowgirl-hat-belly-button-ring_1_320

True Country: The Cowgirl Hat Belly Bling goes out to all those ladies who aren’t afraid of a little cowgirl hat hair. Afterall it is a way of life, so show off your support.

31785-country-cowgirl-belly-ring_1_320Country Music Fan: Being country isn’t always about the horses and getting your boots dirty. This Country Cowgirl Belly Ring pays homage to the women who are in it for those story-telling tunes (better yet the ones who can pick up a guitar and go to town themselves).

Piercings & Doctor’s Orders: How Does Body Jewelry Affect Medial Tests?

woman with labret and nose hoopThere are 206 bones in the human body. If at any point in your life you break one, odds are that you will need an X-Ray. What if you don’t break a bone? What if you’re just part of over 10 percent of the United States population that suffers from migraines? Odds are good that your doctor is going to want an MRI.

Whether you’re facing these concerns now or you think they will never apply to you, it’s good to know how these tests will affect your jewelry. It’s a good to be proactive about these things, and in this case it’s even easy. We’ve done the research for you…

MRI: MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and in this case the name kind of says it all. Wearing metal jewelry in an MRI can not only ruin the doctor’s test results, but it will also be extremely painful and dangerous for you. Possible complications can be as mild as a 2 or 3-grade irritation on the pain scale to an 8 or 9 burning sensation. For this reason, if you’re going to get an MRI and your piercing is too new to remove the jewelry, follow the doctor’s orders when prepping for this test.

photo: redditweekly

X-Ray: In the past you wouldn’t have been able to keep your body jewelry in while getting an extra, but fortunately modern medicine has come a long way. There are some instances where your doctor will still ask you to remove your jewelry (for example, if he needs to examine an area too close to the piercing), but most of the time it shouldn’t be a problem. As you can see in this image, your bling just shows up as a white figure in the shape of whatever you’re wearing. Can you guess what this girl had pierced?

CT Scan: Head and neck issues and injuries often require a CT scan. For this test, you cannot wear metals or even glass. Why? This test relies on radiation, which causes the jewelry to give off a reflection that can compromise the image. If you’re worried about a new piercing closing up, an acrylic retainer may work, but as with an MRI, it’s best to follow doctor’s orders.

We understand; piercings are a lot of work, and you don’t want to go through the whole process again. Unfortunately, if you’re facing something serious and your doctor insists that you remove your body jewelry, you don’t have much of a choice. Your best bet is to wait to remove your jewelry until right before you have the test done, and put it back in as soon as possible afterwards. Good luck!

We’ve Got You Covered: Valentine’s Day Jewlery

Like it or not Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and while there some holidays when you can get away with not having any plans, V-Day isn’t one of them. This poses the sometimes painful question, “What are your plans on February 14?”

Do you and your sweetie have a list of romantic movies on standby? Maybe you don’t have a date, well, at least not a romantic date. Perhaps you and your closest girlfriends get together every year for a “boy bashing” party? Perhaps you’ve decided to ride solo and treat yourself to a night of pampering?

Whatever your plans may be, we’ve got the perfect bling to compliment your evening…

Date Night

Paris is known for being the city of love, and why not with their contributions to the world? French toast, french fries, and the ever-popular french kiss! This year while you’re trying to tantalize your crush, consider the Pink CZ Heart Tongue Ring. It’s sweet, simple, and draws his attention right where you want it. If that’s not enough, it’s versatile. While the pink heart definitely blends in with all of those candy hearts, you can still where it on dates year-round and it won’t look out of place.

image of love belly button ring from BellyBling.net

The Love Belly Button Ring has a little bit of everything: Gems, calligraphy, and flowers. Not only that, but it’s just plain romantic. The curvy, loopy type is reminiscent of old love letters. Now whether that makes you flash back to your time spent in middle school passing notes to your crush or your grandparent’s correspondence during the war, that’s up to you.

Girls Night

image of heart nose ring from BellyBling.netWhen you don’t have a date, Valentine’s Day doesn’t always seem like a reason to celebrate. Fortunately, Heart Nose Hoop Rings are a nice, subtle accent for the evening. The heart design shows that while you appreciate the spirit of the day, it’s not what you’re all about.

image of outline heart belly ring from BellyBling.netThe Outline Heart Belly Ring, on the other hand, is flashy! For that reason, we recommend wearing it to one of those parties like Jessica Biel’s character throws in the movie Valentine’s Day. The Outline Heart Belly Ring is topped off with a large clear gem, and the heart charm is outlined in several shades of pretty pastel gems.  These pastels are also great because they look good with any of the four colors in the bling (pink, peridot, aqua, and hot pink) and still stand out when you’re wearing black.

Solo and Satisfied

image of heart arrow belly ring from BellyBling.netJust because Cupid missed his mark this Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean your heart isn’t open to the possibility of a perfect match. Who knows, maybe this year will be the year? Why not show your optimism with the Heart Arrow Belly Button Ring. Not only do we love the design of this piece, but clear gems go with everything.

No matter what you’re doing for Valentine’s Day there is no reason you shouldn’t be in the holiday spirit.  So go ahead and show off for your date, impress the cutie at the coffee shop, or simply snap a blingin’ selfie for Instagram! And don’t forget the #bellybling

Baby Friendly Belly Bling: Pregnancy Belly Button Rings

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, then by now you should know that just because you’re a Mom-to-be doesn’t mean you have to give up your belly bling. Like maternity stores help to modify your wardrobe, there are special belly rings you can buy to maintain your pre-pregnancy piercing. We like to think our line of pregnancy belly button rings have three important qualities: comfort, fit, and most importantly: style!

Comfortable belly rings

image of flexible belly button ring from bellybling.netFor those first weeks into your pregnancy and the weeks after baby arrives, stock up on our flexible belly rings. We’ve got them in stripes, checks, and more, all in multi-packs so you can have a new one every day of the week. It’s the lightweight, Bioflex plastic design that makes them super comfortable, but it’s the bold colors that make them oh so fun.

Adjustable belly rings

image of pregnancy belly button ringNext up: fit. You need bling that can adjust and stick it out for those nine exciting months with you. Our current fav: the Adjustable Double Hearts belly ring. Not only is this belly bling pretty, but there is a sweet symbolism that comes with the double hearts design; one for you, and one for your soon-to-be bundle of joy. It’s a simple, romantic twist on the slightly overdone “Baby on board.” Plus, unlike that yellow sign, these pregnancy belly button rings go great with any outfit!

Stylish belly rings

You’re already (temporarily) giving up your beloved skinny jeans and favorite tee, so you deserve to rock out with bling.

adjustable pregnancy belly button rings from bellybling.netHow about choosing one that answers the question on everyone’s minds: “Is it a boy or a girl?” The Pink Heart Dangling Belly Ring is a sweet simple way of saying you can’t wait to welcome her into the world. Keeping the she/he secret to yourself? Go for the clear star belly ring and keep them guessing.

image of bellybling.net belly button ring / pregnancy belly ringReady to show off? We’ve got ‘em. A few or our top picks: the Hypoallergenic Belly Ring Channel Gems and the  Heart Hypoallergenic Belly Button Ring. Both are designed to stand out and grab attention! With dangling gems, these pregnancy belly button rings are not meant to be hidden.

The best part about all of these pregnancy belly button rings? Unlike maternity jeans, you’ll want to keep wearing these long after those nine months are over.

Stone Belly Rings: 5 Not to Miss

image of stone belly button rings from bellybling.net

Semi-precious stone belly rings are the perfect mix of understated style with a modern edge. The term “semi-precious” was coined in the gem trade because such stones were easier to come by than precious stones (diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires). But don’t let the semi-precious phrase fool you… these naturally occurring stones are stunning!

Take tiger eye stones for example; they are named based off of their appearance. These stones come in various shades of brown and have lines in them that reflect the sunlight. This makes the tiger stone appear to “glow” in daylight and gives it the same characteristics as a tiger’s eye.

If brown isn’t your color, try fluorite green! These semi-precious stones are a subtle and sophisticated accent, but that’s not all. Fluorite stones are believed to detoxify your body and drive out evil spirits! In turn, these stones boost your immune system and leave you feeling ready for whatever the day may bring.

Some jade stones are also a shade of green like our jade stone organic belly ring, and are known for attracting love and money. And hey, who doesn’t need more of that!?

You’ll notice both fluorite and jade stones look sort of cloudy. Amazonite, on the other hand, generally comes in a solid shade of green. This belly bling is thought to bring out your softer, sweet side.

Have something more casual in mind for a stone belly ring? Nothing fits the bill better than a turquoise stone belly ring. As one of the most widely-recognized stones across the world, turquoise is known as a holy stone in many cultures, where it’s also hailed as a “bringer of good fortune.” What better stone to flaunt than one steeped in rich history and positive connotations?

These five stones come in a variety of styles, ranging from traditional barbell belly rings to nature-themed charm-accented dangle belly rings, so there’s something for everyone.

And as always, if you’re looking for certain styles of stone belly rings you don’t see here, let us know! We’re also open to adding the belly button rings our customers want!

Tongue Piercing Problems & Prevention

newIt’s common knowledge that your mouth is one of, if not the dirtiest, part of your body. It’s also common knowledge that your tongue is a muscle, unlike many other areas of the body that people traditionally pierce (such as ear cartilage, a lobe, fat, etc.).

So, while you should be diligent with any piercing aftercare instructions, it’s extra important that you take care of tongue piercings. In fact, according to a study by the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, the University of Rochester Medical Center, and the University of Rochester, approximately 24,500 patients went to the ER between 2002 and 2008 with an oral piercing-related injury.

If you’re considering getting a tongue piercing, here is the run-down on the top risks you should be aware of:

1.    Bacteria Build-Up – This one is obvious (and rather gross). Everything from the food you digest to the boy you’re kissing has bacteria. Yes, brushing your teeth, rinsing with mouth wash, even rinsing with water helps, but it’s tough to get every last germ. For this reason tongue infections are not uncommon. When you first get your tongue pierced it’s important to rinse with water after every meal and drink for the next week. After that, remember that your piercing won’t be fully “healed” for a year.

2.    Chipped Teeth – Just think about how many times you’ve been eating and you accidentally bite your tongue. While it hurts your tongue, that’s the extent of it. However, if you have a stud in you run the risk of cracking a tooth. People with tongue piercings have to learn to work around this common issue and sometimes even learn a whole new way of chewing. Note: You could also chip your tooth by accidental clacking (say in a bumpy car) or clenching.

3.    Loss of Taste – Your tongue has lots of little taste buds, and people who have had lip piercings often report a change in taste buds to change.  Nothing major, but it is something that you should be prepared for.

4.    Muscle Trauma – First off, you should know it’s normal for your tongue to bleed a little bit upon piercing. That said, as a muscle the tongue consists of many small blood vessels, and hemorrhaging is a possibility (albeit uncommon, it’s just smart to be informed). If your tongue doesn’t stop bleeding for a while, the best thing you can do is apply pressure with a clean towel for 15 minutes and rinse your mouth with cold water afterwards.

Another muscle-related issue that can arise from getting your tongue pierced is nerve damage. Your tongue may not move as smoothly as it once did, and this can impact your regular speech and eating habits.

5.    Swallowing the Stud – Be sure to check that the balls on the end of your bling are tight before going to bed. While accidentally swallowing the stud shouldn’t cause any medical complications, if the piercing is new enough your hole could close up (not to mention the pain that comes with losing your favorite jewelry).

Ok, you’re probably a little freaked out right now. Don’t be! Most tongue piercings do not result in complications when properly and professionally pierced and maintained. Plus, by taking the last few minutes to read this post you’ve already proven that you’re playing it safe and being smart about this.

One last piece of advice, enjoy showing off your new tongue rings!

Ring in 2014 in Style: Belly Rings for New Year’s Eve

There are a few nights each year when you plan your outfits ahead of time. When you’re going on a big date, when your birthday is right around the corner, and of course, New Year’s Eve.

Everyone wants to start the year off in-style, so how do you stand out? Is it by painting your fingernails with “2-0-1-4-!” or “NYE14?” Is it by the wearing the most outrageous heels? Or maybe it’s by sporting the boldest of belly rings for New Year’s Eve?

If dangling, sparkly, extreme bling is what you need to complete your look then look no further! Here’s the run-down on our five favorite top, over-the-top, top down navel rings (that’s a lot of tops!)…

First off, let’s talk about top down belly rings (also called reverse belly button rings) . Not only are they known to be more comfortable, but they’re also known to turn a few heads. Why? It’s a twist on traditional belly bling. With top down jewelry, the focal point actually sits above your belly button. Most belly bling isn’t set up that way, so people aren’t used to seeing it.

Top Down Hinged Tribal Dangling Belly Ring

We love tribal designs. Not only are they one of the most popular subjects for a tattoo, but tribal design also make for great jewelry! The smooth twist really draws your eye in. Add the right top to compliment it, and you’re ready to go.

Vintage Chandelier Top Down Belly Ring

Belly rings for New Year's Eve: vintage belly ring / chandelier belly ring from BellyBling.net

This bling has a little bit of everything: that vintage look that’s so in right now, chains, charms, and a crystal. What more could you ask for? Not to mention that the chains are draped in a way that’s sure to grab everyone’s, or just the right someone’s, attention.

Top Down Vine Belly Button Ring

Belly rings for New Year's Eve: top down gem belly ring

This piece needs no introduction; it’s the epitome of belly bling and is by far one of our favorites on the belly rings for New Year’s Eve list. However, we’ll go ahead and say a few words anyway. Actually, we’ll say three: Oh, la, la.

Winged Heart Top Down Belly Ring

Belly rings for New Year's Eve: heart belly ring from belly bling

With each New Year’s Eve comes new hope. Whether that means for professional success, personal triumphs, or romantic rendezvous, we’ll leave that up to you, but if romance is your “heart’s desire” then why not let it be known? Show off your inner-romantic and hopeful heart with this winged heart top down belly ring. The red crystal is simply beautiful. So is the sentiment.

Top Down Cluster Navel Ring

Belly rings for New Year's Eve: gem navel ring from bellybling.net

This jewelry is colorful, creative, and just plain fun!  What’s more, its reversible, meaning you can wear it as a top down or flip it to go along with a traditional outfit. Either way, it will definitely add a little flare to your evening.

If you’ll be flaunting your bling while ringing in the new year, don’t forget to take a picture and share it: #bellybling

Q & A: Gold Belly Rings

Image of real gold belly button ring from Belly BlingAt BellyBling we take pride in our wide variety of quality and affordable jewelry.  That said, when your date wants to buy you a nice birthday present, or you just want to spoil yourself a little bit, surgical steel is not necessarily the type of jewelry that comes to mind.  When you want to wear the best, you think of gold belly rings.

You may appreciate the value (sentimental or financial) of gold, but what do you really know about this precious metal?

Question #1: What is the difference between 14 karat gold and 18 karat gold?

Let’s back up. What’s a karat? A karat is simply a way to measure the purity of gold; it represents the ratio of gold to other metals within the jewelry. Each piece of gold jewelry contains 24 different parts of metal. For example, a 14k gold ring contains 14 parts of gold and 10 parts of other metals.

Now that you understand what 14K gold means, the labels should all start making sense. 18K gold is then 18 parts gold and 6 parts of another metal or metals. 24K gold is 100 percent pure gold.

Question #2: Are certain karats better suited for jewelry?

Yes. Gold is (relatively) soft compared to other metals, and for this reason 14K gold is often ideal for jewelry. Since it’s made up of more assorted metals than 18K gold, it is more durable. This is especially good to know if you live an active lifestyle, in case your jewelry needs to withstand a few blows every now and then.

Added bonus, 14K gold is also much cheaper!

Question #3: How many types of gold are there?image of white gold belly button ring from Belly Bling

First off, all gold starts out yellow. White gold is created when you add alloy nickel or palladium (white metals) with yellow gold. Our selection of white gold belly rings is one of our most popular categories.

image of rose gold belly button ring from Belly BlingWhile yellow gold and and white gold belly are the two most common types, lately a third type of gold, rose gold, is growing in popularity. Rose gold is created by combining pure yellow gold and copper. Adding the copper gives gold a rose colored tint and makes a great update to even the most classic belly rings styles.

Case in point: our rose gold ball belly ring.

Question #4: How do you clean gold?

Just like when you get your ears pierced and the store hands you a cleaning solution, there are solutions you can buy for your gold. You can also clean your gold using an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.

Note: While we don’t recommend polishing all of your gold jewelry this way, you can clean our line of 14K belly button rings with detergent-free soap and water.

Question #5: Anything else you should know?

While avoiding detergent-based soapy water, you should also avoid chlorine (your eyes aren’t the only thing this chemical takes its toll on). Chlorine can permanently change the color of your gold belly bling. Why take the risk? Leave it at home while you’re at that pool party.

Last but not least, stay away from sand. As we mentioned, real gold is a soft metal. It’s so soft that it can get scratched up when rubbed in or on sand, so before you head to the beach be sure and change out your belly ring for something a little more durable, such as titanium body jewelry or even a flexible plastic belly button ring.

Whether you prefer white or yellow gold, there is no denying that it makes a statement. When you buy it for yourself it says you’re sophisticated, and when given as a gift from a loved one, it says you mean the world.
