Spring Trend Watch: Crop Tops

Believe it or not, Spring is right around the corner (we know it’s hard when there’s so much snow). The first official day is Thursday, March 20- only 66 days, but who’s counting? Us!

Even though you may not be in that warm-weather mind frame yet, it’s time you get there. Fashion is always thinking ahead, and crop tops are coming back next season to avenge all the long layers we’re wearing during the winter months.

Crop tops are great because not only do they allow you to show some skin, but they’re perfect for showing off your belly bling. So to help inspire your spring style, and hopefully warm you up a little bit, we’ve put together a list of our favorite crop top and navel ring combinations.

1For the fancy-at-heart, try a gold knit lurex crop top. Shimmering and stunning, this top from Bloomingdales is a great option for those occasions you’d like to quietly turn a few heads. Now on to our favorite part, the matching bling: Gold Plated Flower and Teardrop Belly Ring. This beauty captures all of the aspects we love about the top; the colors, shine, and gem stones really compliment the shirt.

For the plaid princess we recommend a cropped sleeveless flannel shirt. This one from Urban Outfitters is  light, airy, yet doesn’t lose that homegrown, good girl vibe. Speaking of homegrown, what’s more American than fresh baked cherry pie? Which makes our Triple Red Cherry Belly Button Ring the perfect companion to this country girl style.

For the groovy girl, check out a floral crop top. This one from Forever 21 combines the classic femininity of flowers with an updated, flowing silhouette. To match, our Dangling Triple Flower Gold Belly Button Ring. Like the top, the florals are pretty and dangling chains create a flowy, wispy feel.

For the bold babe, our vote goes for a crop with details. Charlotte Russe’s spiked bar-front crop top is a perfect match for the Dangling Clear Gem Handcuff Belly Ring. This fitted crop top will really bring out those curves, but what’s so fun about the handcuff belly bling? These bad boys actually slide open and closed! After all, why not show the guys that you’re a force to be reckoned with?

For the wild child, try pairing a cropped trapeze cami from with an animal print belly ring. The fun and flirty top from Express features a pretty solid-colored fabric, making it the perfect backdrop for a wild print. While the Pink Leopard Print Belly Bling we show here is a great match, nearly any animal print will bring this cute top to life. It’s purrrrfect.

If you consider yourself a classic cutie, go for the simple. The Three-Quarter-Sleeve Cropped Top from Macy’s is both sexy and sophisticated. Our favorite thing about this top is the fact that it’s so simple, all eyes will be on the belly ring. Our top pick for this crop: a Clear Swarovski Crystal Ferido Belly Ring. How’s that for some belly bling?

Celeb Spotlight: Katy Perry

Katy Perry first burst on to the pop music charts back in 2008. Topping Billboard’s list with “I Kissed a Girl,” we got our first real taste of Katy, and we liked it! But what we really love is Katy’s ability to rock so many hair styles and colors.

In honor of Katy’s 29th birthday (today!), we’ve decided to highlight our top 5 favs. And since we’re all about the bling factor, we’ve added what we think would make a great bling add-on.

Style: FeminineMTMzMjkzMDUxNDg0NTNfMQ

While Katy is known for her ever-changing color, this one struck us because of the softness of the pink. When a color is so shocking (like the electric blue she’s been known to flaunt), it takes away from her gorgeous features. The added bows soften the look even further.

Bling Add-On: Gem flower tragus earring

Style: Lightkaty-perry-short-blond-hair

A multi-toned color like this lightens and brightens without washing out the skin tone. In fact, we think it makes skin look even more luminescent. The angled cut helps too, drawing the eye from top to bottom and slimming the face.

Bling Add-On: Pink glitter ball captive bead ring

Style: Modernuntitled

Nothing updates a look more than blunt cut bangs. The eye-framing style is perfect for Katy and pairs nicely with ends that are a little more jagged and grazing the collarbone. It’s easy to go long with this style too- extensions can add volume without losing the focus on the face.

Bling Add-On: Spike marble twist eyebrow ring

Style: Fun2008 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

Layers and waves have a way of looking spunky, even with an all-over color. Add a little bling and a messy part that’s just slightly off-center and this is a look that’s fun and flirty on almost anyone.

Bling Add-On: Owl labret ring

Style: SexyKaty-Perry-hair

The tossled curls and layers take on a new dimension in a warm strawberry blonde color. Well-placed highlights around the face look perfect with dramatic eye shadow and bold lip color.

Bling Add-On: Dangle gem cartilage earring

So tell us: what’s your favorite Katy Perry style? And which celeb would you like to see as the subject of our next Celeb Style Spotlight?

5 Fashion Trends Always in Style

It’s true that trends come and go- and some we hope never come back again (parachute pants and scrunchies, anyone?). But here are five of our favorite fashion trends that keep us coming back for more. The best part? Jewelry tends to follow suit and complete the look.

Animal prints
animalIt’s probably safe to say that animal prints have been around since the days of loin cloths in the jungle. The call of the wild also makes a great value since animal prints tend to be season-less so investing a little more in a key piece doesn’t seem extravagant. Today, animal prints make a strong statement on accessories from boots and bags to scarves and shoes so they’re a reality for even the most budget-challenged. Our favorite update is the move from traditional browns and blacks to colored animal prints- especially in shades of bright, bold neon. Bling factor: Tap in to your inner wild child with a Zebra Print Belly Ring.

Military-inspired

militaryWhile the younger crowd may automatically think “camo” when they hear the phrase “military style,” it actually harkens back to the days of World War II, when its influences were recruited into civilian fashion. Military style is all about the details: gold metal buttons, shoulder epaulettes, double-breasted silhouettes, piping trim, mandarin-style collars. Colors are generally deep and heavy- classic black, rich navy, solid olive drab-which provide the perfect backdrop for those details. Today’s take on military looks fantastic with skinny jeans. What better way to show off all the accents than a simple, slim-fitting silhouette. Bling factor: Sport a Gold Captive Bead Ring to set off gold buttons.

Modern
modernAlthough it’s really best described as “minimalist,” this look first made headlines in the groovy late 60s with bold Pucci prints, color block dresses, turtlenecks and miniskirts. Today, it’s evolved to include a more muted, neutral color scheme and simple silhouettes, but still boasts simplicity as its key look. So why does this look never go out of style? It’s easy to transform from daytime shopping to a girls’ night out. Just swap out your jewelry, change your shoes, or do your hair for a totally different look. Modern colors and patterns are very versatile! Bling factor: Nothing says modern elegance like a simple Diamond Nose Screw ring.

Menswear

menswearLondon calling! British menswear has been around for more than three decades. Dressing kings and commoners, the red carpet and runways, London has seen and inspired it all. In fact, the three-piece suit that we know and love today came from London. It was originally designed for Charles II as a means to avoid wearing the then traditional men’s uniform: breeches and a vest. Nowadays we still love a man who can “suit up,” but it doesn’t necessarily mean a three-piece suit. Three-hundred years later this style has evolved a bit to include a nice pair of jeans and a jacket. Bling factor: The Triple Gem Helix Earring is just enough bling to add a feminine touch.

Floral

floralFloral Fashion originated during the Egyptian period when flowers were featured in wreaths; however, it wasn’t until the Roman period that people began to wear flowers. It began with the Greeks, who used them to decorate crowns. After that flowers became a sort of status symbol. For example, in the East floral printed clothing cost quite a bit of money, so you had to have money to wear these items. As you know, today that’s not necessarily the case. Flowers are featured on everything from shirts to our beloved summer sundresses. Bling factor: Antique Flower Belly Ring shows your flower power.

Shift into Neutral

Another change of seasons is coming up fast, and nothing works better to bridge the wardrobe gap than neutrals. Moving from summer bolds and brights to more muted fall colors is easy when you add a layer of classic khaki, a pop of cool gray, or even a hint of warm chocolate brown.

Cartilage jewelry in a simple style or accented with clear or single gems is your best option if you’re looking for ways to work your wardrobe effortlessly from summer to fall.

Ear cuff accent

A simple cuff with clear crystal accents complements the simple mix of colorful skinnies and an autumn-ready khaki cardigan. Bling it up more by adding some bangles or a mix of pendants with more clear gems.

Brilliant silver cartilage jewelry

Silvers and grays are typically winter hues, but when paired with bold orange, it can span the seasons. Cartilage earrings are super trendy right now and nothing makes them hotter than when done in a cool silver tone.

ne2

Industrial barbell earrings softened with color

There’s no mistaking an industrial barbell jewelry, with its simple, clean line. But a pop of color via a sparkling gem on each end is an easy way to bring it all together.

Talk Back: Parental Guidance?

caputoThis season on TLC’s Long Island Medium, Theresa notices via Skype that her daughter Victoria- who’s away at college- is suddenly sporting a new nose ring, AND a new tattoo on her wrist. Later in the show, Victoria comes home from college and reveals another tattoo, proclaiming “I can make my own choices for myself” when her Mom gets in a snit over these discoveries. The ironic part? Her father stands across the room, with tattoos covering his own arms!

And let’s not forget the child stars growing up and sporting their own tats and body jewelry. The list is getting longer: Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens. Even Amanda Bynes made the news (again!) with her new cheek piercings. There is something confirming about seeing the stars you’ve idolized grow up and suddenly have piercings and tattoos to flaunt.

Did you let your parents know your plans for a piercing or a tattoo? If not, what was their reaction when they found out?

Celebrity Style: Beyoncé

Although we know she wasn’t exactly referring to belly rings in her hit song Put a Ring on It, megastar Beyoncé certainly has been rocking the belly ring bling lately.

In her new campaign for H&M, the pop star beauty sports some understated navel rings along with the oh-so-sexy bikinis. hm

And who can forget her turn on Shape magazine this past spring?

Beyoncé is one of those stars not afraid to switch up her style, and the constant change is just one of the things that we love about her. From her early days on the stage with Destiny’s Child to her alter ego, Sasha Fierce, and on to super-stardom, she’s never afraid to try something new. Even motherhood hasn’t slowed down her evolution of style.

Here are just a few of our favorite Beyoncé looks, and the belly rings that we thing would make the perfect finishing touch.

This look is all about the updated accessories- colorful stilettos, long pendant, zippered bag, bold hat. An animal print belly ring in an unexpected bright yellow would make a real statement.

Nothing is more striking than the clean lines of a classic white suit. And nothing is more classic than a real gold belly ring in 14k gold. Cubic zirconia accents add a little extra bling.

Style: Funky & Retro

So many styles would work with the fringe and peek-a-boo style of this dress, but we’re leaning towards this circle shield belly ring. The Swarovski crystals add plenty of eye-catching style without being distracting since it lies flat.

In-and-out belly rings like this chameleon belly ring creates two distinct focal points- perfect for peeking through a sheer dress or top.

Throwing a menswear-inspired jacket over a pretty lace top gives you the best of both worlds- much like this cute reverse belly ring. You get the simple stud accent and a dangling butterfly.

Twice as Nice: Double Belly Button Piercing

girl in bikini with double belly button piercingSo, you’ve had your belly ring piercing for a while now and you’re ready to add some more bling. Or maybe you haven’t had your belly piercing done yet and want to go for maximum impact. Either way, you might want to consider doubling up- two piercings!

The most common double belly button piercing is to have one on the top and one on the bottom. Another option is to get a piercing on each side. Both are great ways to wear two belly rings at the same time, so you can flaunt coordinating colors or themes. Wear a non-dangling starfish belly ring on top and dangling anchor belly ring on the bottom for a cute summer look. Are you a cowgirl at heart? Pair a cowboy boot belly ring with horse belly ring and you’re set.

Or if you’re wild about feather belly rings, you can wear one on each side with a side-by-side double belly button piercing.

Having a piercing on top and on bottom is also a great way to add visual impact without having to always wear dangling belly rings because two piercings will visually add length.

And if two piercings are still not enough, multiples are also possible: three piercings across the top and one on the bottom creates a super cool look, or one on each side and on the top and bottom to create a cross pattern which is sometimes called a cage… the options are endless.

If you have a double piercing or multiples- send us your photos! We’d love to see just how you wear your belly bling.

Trending: Anchor Belly Ring

anchor belly ringAhoy! Summer’s here and what better time for a new anchor belly button ring that’s reminiscent of the water, surf, and sand? Add in the sparkle of cool aqua or shimmering white stones atop the trendy anchor shape and you’ve got some bling that’s sure to turn heads.

While anchor jewelry is a hot trend now for its super cute style, there is also some pretty cool symbolism behind an anchor- it’s a traditional symbol of hope, stability and steadfastness. When an anchor is dropped from a ship, it is grounding itself and creating a foundation for rest from the tides and waves. Some anchor designs also have a ship’s wheel (called a helm) which can symbolize being in control of your own destiny. An anchor belly ring is the perfect way to show off your beliefs of hope, calm, and serenity.

Anchor belly rings also fit right in with the nautical style that’s hot this summer: wear one to accent a crisp navy stripe crop top, bring a little added attention to a pair of bold red shorts, or rock a white hot bikini. Nautical styles are usually thought of as classic or timeless- what better way to update it than with a sexy anchor belly ring?

How often do you need to clean a new belly ring piercing?

Dear Belly Bling:

“I’d like to get my belly button pierced this summer. How many times a day will I need to clean the belly ring piercing in the first few weeks?”

-A navel-piercing newbie

piercing1This is a great question! It always helps to be informed about the care of a belly ring piercing before you actually have it done.

For medical-based questions such as these, we always refer to guidelines from the American Association of Professional Piercers (APP).

According to APP, you can use a fragrance free mild liquid soap or a packaged additive-free sterile saline solution. When using soap, one that’s an anti-microbial or germicidal is best. For the saline solution, you can mix your own by dissolving ¼ tsp. non-iodized sea salt in 8 oz. of warm bottled or distilled water.

The saline rinse can be used as a soak for 5-10 minutes a day (just lean over, place the cup over the piercing, and while holding the cup in place, lay down). You can also soak a gauze pad in the solution and place that on your piercing. Rinse with plain distilled or bottled water after to clean off any salt residue.

If you choose to use soap, don’t clean it more than 1-2 times a day.  It’s best to use it in the shower rather than the bath tub, as bath water can retain bacteria.

After cleaning, dry the piercing with paper towels or napkins. Regular towels can snag on the piercing and can also spread bacteria.

A few things to avoid during the healing process: hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, harsh/abrasive soaps, ointments, and lotions. Also avoid over-cleaning a new piercing as it can irritate the hole and the surrounding skin which will delay the healing.

With summer here, it’s super important to avoid lakes, rivers, hot tubs, pools, etc. that are not hygienic. If you will be in the water, protect your piercing with a waterproof bandage.

We strongly suggest you have your piercing done by a professional piercer; he or she will also have advice to ensure the piercing heals nicely.

Most importantly, the belly ring your piercer uses during the procedure is designed for safety so be sure and keep it in for the amount of time he or she suggests.

Once it’s healed, it’s best to stick with lighter weight, non-dangle belly rings and gradually work up to wearing heavier dangling belly rings and top down belly rings.

Good luck!
