Five Products for Piercings

new signWhen you get a new piercing the salon should hand you a paper containing their recommendations for safe and clean aftercare. Sometimes the paper will be more like a slip and other times it takes on the form of a book.

First and foremost, it’s important to mention that you should always follow your piercing artist’s advice. If they tell you not to use a product, it’s probably not appropriate for your piercing.

However, they’ve got their recommendations, and we’ve got ours. Ask your artist what they think about you using these products to supplement their cleaning instructions…

1. Sea Saltsalt

Soaking your piercing in sea salt water not only alleviates skin irritation, it speeds up the time it takes for your new hole to heal! Depending on where your piercing is, either soak it in the sea salt water or dab a soaked cotton ball over your piercing. The rule of thumb is for every 8 ounces of warm water, add ¼ teaspoon of sea salt. Note: DO NOT use table salt or ocean water. Table salt contains iodine, and ocean water has lots of bacteria.

2. H2Ocean Piercing Spray

As you probably know, new piercings can be really sensitive; for this reason, sprays like H2Ocean Piercing Spray are often the cleaner of choice. Simply spray your piercing three to four times a day with H2Ocean Piercing Spray. This product works to clean your piercing while gently removing any discharge. A mouth rinse is also available for oral piercings.

3. Dr. Piercing’s Hole-istic Care

Dr. Piercing does the work for you on this one. Instead of going to the store to round up all of the best skin-care products, now they come in an easy swab applicator! Dr. Piercing has several products to choose from, but this one has the most versatile remedies. Dr. Piercing’s Hole-istic Care contains saline solution, allantoin, panthenol, and aloe vera (finally, a product with ingredients we can pronounce). In a nutshell, these ingredients promote healing by decreasing inflammation and increasing blood flow. It’s also a skin protectant.

4. Zinc & Vitamin C

This one isn’t so much a product, in fact, think of it as good advice. When you have a cold, Zinc and Vitamin C boost your immune system. When you have a new piercing, Zinc and Vitamin C promote healthy healing. What can we say? Some remedies work better from the inside than out!

5. Studex Piercing Care Solution

Studex just so happens to be the “World’s Largest Ear Piercing Manufacturer,” and this product is best left to pierced ears. Studex Piercing Care Solution works to keep both your piercing and jewelry clean, and is especially helpful when it comes to removing soap and shampoo residue after showers. Hey, if the name is world-renowned it’s good enough for us!

So there you have it! Know a great remedy that isn’t on our list? There are some tricks of the trade you just can’t find online. Please-  share your secret!

What’s the Difference between 14 Gauge and 16 Gauge Belly Button Rings?

Dear Belly Bling:

I’ve noticed both 14 gauge and 16 gauge belly button rings. What’s the difference?

-Observant in Orlando

image of 16 gauge belly ring from Bellybling.netAh yes… what a great question! You are right; some belly rings are marked as 14 gauge, while others may be specifically listed as 16 gauge belly button rings.

Belly button piercings are a little more complicated than traditional ear lob piercings. Instead of thinking of it like getting your ears pierced, think of it more like putting gauges in your ears. There are many different belly ring options, and they come in several different gauge sizes.

On average gauge sizes range from 12 to 24, but the measurements aren’t what you’d expect. A 12 gauge isn’t 12 millimeters or 1/12 of an inch, it’s actually 2 millimeters and 5/64 of an inch. Also, while you would think that a 24 gauge is the largest available, it’s actually the smallest. The numbers go backwards so the closer it is to zero, the bigger the hole.

When you go to get your piercing it’s important to talk with the piercing artist about what size piercing needle he/she is using. Most naval piercings are done with a 14 gauge needle, meaning the jewelry you pick out will also need to be a 14 gauge. Though 14 gauges are the most common, your piercing artist may also use a 16 gauge needle. 16 is fine, but the artist shouldn’t use a size smaller (18 gauge) than that. If he wants to pierce you with an 18 gauge needle, you should find another artist!

Since 14 is the most common size for a naval piercing there is a greater selection of belly bling for this gauge than other sizes. However, 16 gauge naval piercings are gaining in popularity, and there are a lot of 16 gauge options too.

As with any piercing, you should give the hole time to heal before switching out the jewelry. Once your piercing is completely healed, if you want, you can stretch out a 16 gauge hole to fit 14 gauge jewelry (the process is similar to stretching out your ear lobe piercing).

The opposite is also true. You can wear a 16 gauge belly button ring in a 14 gauge hole. The trick is to make sure you’ve had the piercing long enough so as not to risk the hole closing up.

So which size of a gauge should your piercing be done with, 14 or 16? The answer is either! Just be aware of what size your gauge is when you’re shopping for jewelry. It is also a good idea to look online and in stores to make sure you can find jewelry you like that will fit your gauge.

Dream Catcher Belly Rings: Spiritual Style

image of dream catcher belly ring from BellyBling.netWe are dreamers, and we are believers.

Our parents tell us that Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny exist, and so they exist. We don’t have to see them to know that somehow, magically, there will be a quarter under our pillow where a tooth once was. Then, as we grow up, we lose some of that magic.

It’s like in the movie the Santa Clause, when Dr. Neil asks Charlie how he knows Santa is real. Charlie says, “Have you ever seen a million dollars? …Just because you can’t see something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.”

Of course, when we grow up we learn that Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny were all Mom and Dad, but the power of our dreams is one belief that survives. Now you can embrace that power with dream catcher belly bling.

Native American in origin, dream catchers have been around for generations. Many believe the Ojibway tribe was the first to create them, but there are also Chippewa and Lakota legends. No matter the tribe, the meaning behind each element of the dream catcher is the same.

The webbing inside of dream catchers is designed to trap evil spirits and bad dreams and let the good ones through. In the night, it’s thought that spirits float freely. Good spirits are able to pass through the hole in the middle, and then trickle down into the feathers. Bad spirits, however, get caught in the webbing. As the sun comes up and hits the dream catcher, the bad spirits are destroyed by the light. They evaporate, never to trouble you.

The hoop itself symbolizes harmony and strength. The bead brings you blessings from one of the seven directions (directions depend on the color):

  • Blue: Father Sky
  • White: Ancestors’ knowledge of people
  • Green: Mother Earth
  • Purple: the inner self – the Creator
  • Red: our Ancestors’ knowledge of the land
  • Yellow: our Ancestors’ wisdom
  • Black: a road with two directions – one is abuse, the other healing

Dream catcher belly rings range from simple to ornate, some being decorated with wolf charms to bring out your inner animal spirit.

So how about it, are you a believer?

Shift into Neutral

Another change of seasons is coming up fast, and nothing works better to bridge the wardrobe gap than neutrals. Moving from summer bolds and brights to more muted fall colors is easy when you add a layer of classic khaki, a pop of cool gray, or even a hint of warm chocolate brown.

Cartilage jewelry in a simple style or accented with clear or single gems is your best option if you’re looking for ways to work your wardrobe effortlessly from summer to fall.

Ear cuff accent

A simple cuff with clear crystal accents complements the simple mix of colorful skinnies and an autumn-ready khaki cardigan. Bling it up more by adding some bangles or a mix of pendants with more clear gems.

Brilliant silver cartilage jewelry

Silvers and grays are typically winter hues, but when paired with bold orange, it can span the seasons. Cartilage earrings are super trendy right now and nothing makes them hotter than when done in a cool silver tone.

Industrial barbell earrings softened with color

There’s no mistaking an industrial barbell jewelry, with its simple, clean line. But a pop of color via a sparkling gem on each end is an easy way to bring it all together.

Six Snacks for a Super Summer Body

girl in pink bikini with strawberry belly ring and starsSummertime is all about feeling and looking your best. Whether you count on the activities you’re involved in or a rigid exercise routine to keep you in shape, it’s just as important to eat right.

Make sure what goes in your body complements what you’re expecting to get out of it! Incorporate these summer snacks into your diet to keep your figure fit and fabulous.

Oats – High in soluble fiber (known for promoting good digestion) and energy, oats will fill you up without bogging you down. Try them for breakfast with some yogurt and berries on top, or eat the oats dry as a mid-day granola snack!

Lemons & Limes - It’s safe to say everyone has had “that” moment; either you bit into a lemon yourself and your face puckered up or you’ve watched a little kid do it. These fruits pack a punch! Though high in Vitamin C, it’s their flavor that makes us love lemons. No matter how much a person enjoys water, there is no denying it’s nice to have a little flavor sometimes. Skip the caloric juice and soda by adding a slice of lemon or lime to your drink!

Mulberries – There is no denying that summer is the season when a majority of fruit is at its freshest and most plentiful. Fortunately for beach bodies, mulberries are one of those tasty treats. A great source of potassium, fiber, and Vitamin C, one serving of mulberries is only 43 calories! Delicious dry or juicy, mix mulberries into your salad to add great flavor without the guilt. Note: raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries are also a good option.

Eggs - Cheese and butter aside, eggs are a great option for someone looking to fuel their body while watching their weight. Eggs are cheap, versatile in consumption, and high in protein. Help yourself to as many egg whites as you like, but limit yourself to one yolk a day.

Summer Squash – How can you go wrong with summer built into the name?! It may be high in nutrients, but one serving is just 10 calories! Try it as a baked goods additive or grilled.

Salmon - Most fish, when prepared efficiently, offers necessary nutrients for little to no calories. Even shrimp (if you stretch the definition of fish) is high in protein. However, there is no diet seafood quiet like salmon. Salmon contains omega-3 oil that fights fat cells in the body, keeping new fat cells from forming and wearing down old ones! What more could you ask for in food!?

Now that you know our top picks for a sleek summer shape, tell us yours! What’s your delicious and nutritious go-to food?

Industrial Barbells: Designing a Temple Fit for the Gods

feather barbell earringIf our bodies are a temple, why not decorate the walls?

As human beings we were born to stand out, and our bodies are the ultimate form of self-expression. Unfortunately, jewelry didn’t always offer the best “wallpaper” options.

What started out as stud earrings turned into hoops, dangles, gauges, and eventually industrial barbells. Just like studs gradually progressed to more adventuresome piercings, industrial barbell jewelry options have come a long way.

An industrial piercing used to only refer to two piercings in the upper ear cartilage connected by a straight, grey bar. Fortunately, those bulky industrial bars have evolved into some considerably more elegant options.

Finally, you can bling-out your industrial bars with everything from fuchsia gems to flowers, to feathers! Belly Bling offers a variety of means to adorn your industrial.owl barbell earring

Feeling reminiscent of last fall? We offer an owl-accented industrial barbell (‘Hoo’ knew those birds of prey would be the next big thing?!).

Looking for some less delicate options in industrial barbells? We’ve got you covered. Try a steel triple nautical star or machine gun industrial barbell.

machine gun barbell earringIndustrial piercings have been on the scene for a while now, and you’re reaping the benefits. In addition to the variety of industrial barbells, there are now different types of industrial piercings. In addition to vertical industrial piercings, horizontal industrial piercings and industrials that loop back through a rook piercing are also becoming popular.

With so many options it has never been easier to express yourself. So tell us, how do you decorate your temple with industrial barbells?

What’s Hot: Dermal Piercing Jewelry

skinny girl with belly ring and dermalThere’s no doubt that one of most requested items we’re hearing is dermal piercing jewelry.

Dermal piercings are different than typical surface piercings in that only one end of the dermal piercing jewelry is visible; the other end is embedded in the dermal layer of your skin (hence the name). A dermal piercing is also sometimes called a microdermal piercing since it’s a small implant under the skin.  Dermal piercings are also distinct because they can be placed on any flat surface of the body, allowing people to pierce body parts that were once thought impossible.

Hips and eyebrows are the most popular locations for dermal piercings; however, you can also pierce your cheek, fingers, wrist, ankle, chest, neck, back, and even the conch of your ear.

The first variation you’ll notice is the dermal piercing jewelry itself. On one end you’ll see a normal gem or other stud-style piece, like you’re used to, and on the other end there is a flat bar with holes in it. That is the “anchor,” and it will go, and stay, underneath your skin.

Where can I get a dermal piercing?

Sure, you understand how a normal piercing gun works, but dermal piercings are done a little differently…

Most piercing salons that perform surface piercings will also do dermal piercings. To start off, the piercing artist will mark your skin with an ink dipped toothpick or a very fine tip marker. As with a normal ear piercing, this just shows you where it’s going to go.

Now we’re on to the piercing itself. This part can be done with a normal piercing needle or a dermal punch. If you have a choice, go with the dermal punch! Some states don’t allow this tool (it’s technically a Class II medical device), but it is the least traumatic way to make a hole. Dermal punch healing time is also shortened.

Dermal punches consist of a tool with a rounded, hole-sized end that removes the skin with a punch/grind motion.

Dermal piercing healing time

Once you have your new dermal piercing, expect to wait anywhere from one to three months (depending on the location of the piercing) before replacing your dermal piercing jewelry top. Removing or replacing it too soon can cause delay healing or cause permanent tissue damage.

In addition to an estimated healing time, your artist should also provide you with cleaning instructions. Ask to see written aftercare advice before getting your piercing. If the salon doesn’t have it, you should highly consider checking out another salon.

As with all piercings, there is some chance of rejection with dermals. If the anchor becomes dislodged out of its pocket under the sking, a lump can form near the site.

new 140

Finally, dermal piercings differ from regular piercings because if you decide you no longer want the piercing, you’ll have to have it professionally removed since it’s embedded under the skin. Ask your piercer about the process for removal before you decide to have a dermal piercing done.

Dermal jewelry

newnew141Some of the most common dermal piercing jewelry is simple gem tops, but as the popularity of these piercings grows, so does the range of dermal anchor tops. Hello Kitty dermal jewelry is a hot style now, as is our clear dermal top which is a great way to conceal a dermal piercing if needed.image of hello kitty dermal ring
